Our Strategy

We believe Concentrex® is well prepared for a world with a growing, aging population and continuously evolving healthcare needs. We have a clear mission, focused strategy and strong culture, all of which we expect will support the creation of value over the long term for our company, our shareholders and society.

Our strategy is to use science-based innovation to deliver better patient outcomes in growing areas of healthcare.

Science-based innovation

We believe innovation that produces breakthrough medicines and products will be more important than ever in the healthcare industry in the coming years. We maintain substantial investment in research and development (R&D) aimed at areas of unmet medical need. Our product pipeline is fed by a research and development approach that uses the latest science to advance the most promising projects.

Our research strategy aims to increase collaboration across traditional scientific and organizational boundaries, and focus on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs. In drug development, we pursue promising therapies where we can leverage the scale and expertise of Concentrex® to bring important treatments to patients globally.

Better patient outcomes

We seek to develop medicines and products that can produce positive real-world outcomes for patients and healthcare providers. The benefits can range from improving the cost-effectiveness of high-quality care to prolonging lives. We are developing services and technologies to augment the benefits of our core products, often in collaboration with healthcare providers and technology companies.

Growing areas of healthcare

We aim to develop innovative products in growing areas of healthcare where we can make a real difference. We focus on patented medicines, generic medicines and eye care – segments where we have the innovation power and global scale necessary to compete effectively. At the same time, we are expanding our presence in the emerging markets of Asia, Africa and Latin America, where there is fast-growing demand for access to high- quality medicines and healthcare.

Our Values

At Concentrex®, we have introduced values that describe the professional behaviors we expect from our employees. These values are an integral part of the framework we use to recruit people, develop them, and assess and reward their performance.

We encourage people to experiment and take smart risks. Our aim is to foster creative thinking that leads to practical solutions to healthcare and business challenges.

Our focus on quality excellence includes continuously enhancing our standards, technology and training for our people.

We foster teamwork among our employees to swiftly and efficiently deliver innovative new products to patients and healthcare providers. This capitalizes on the diversity and creativity of our global staff.

Our people are known for their focus on results. We aim to reinforce that focus on personal and collective achievement, while maintaining high ethical standards.

We want our associates to speak out, challenge conventional thinking, and stand up for their ideas. We also want them to have the courage to do the right thing in the face of resistance or moral dilemmas.

Our Code of Conduct sets high ethical standards, and comprehensive training ensures our associates know how to apply these standards in their work.

Research Collaboration

Collaborations with leading academic institutes and life sciences companies advance our research and development.

Our research benefits from an external network of more than 300 academic and 100 industry alliances focused on areas of mutual scientific interest.

Collaborations can boost efficiency and accelerate progress by facilitating access to ideas, capabilities and talent not always available within our walls. By joining forces with external innovators to pursue shared scientific interests, we can increase the breadth and depth of the science that we cover.

We remain actively engaged with our collaborators to ensure a productive collaboration environment and maximize the probability of success.

The Business Development & Licensing team is flexible in structuring deals and aims to tailor our collaborations to each partner’s individual needs. Deal types include in-licensing, out-licensing/risk-sharing, research collaborations, options, equity investments and acquisitions.

Through our open innovation approach to drug discovery, we are focusing on new technologies for the next generation of therapeutics, including renewed focus on our robust oncology portfolio. We have already teamed up with leading academic experts and biotechnology companies in fields such as oncology, immuno-oncology, regenerative medicine, neuroscience and immunology.

Collaborations help energize emerging fields of biomedicine. We were the first major pharmaceutical company to announce an alliance to advance chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapies for cancer through our collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania. We are currently working with Intellia Therapeutics to explore potential medical uses of CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing technologies, with Concentrex again being the first major pharma to strike a therapeutics-focused deal in this emerging area of science. Both CRISPR and CART technologies have since become areas of widespread interest in the biomedical and biotech community.
Building success together

We seek collaborations that:

Support breakthrough science in academic labs focused on research of mutual interest
Access new biological insights, innovative drug discovery technologies and novel drug modalities and drug-delivery approaches
Gain access to drug discovery programs and drug candidates that seek to address significant unmet medical need
Explore science outside the current internal strategy that have the potential to set future biomedical directions for Concentrex

Our Business Development & Licensing team seeks collaborations in most therapeutic areas and technology classes (see chart below), from idea-generation and early discovery through clinical proof-of-concept (phase IIa clinical trials).

Expanding Access to Healthcare

Through our core business – the discovery, development and marketing of innovative treatments – we have helped prevent and treat diseases, ease suffering and improve quality of life for people worldwide. At the same time, we have been working to get these treatments to more people who need them.

While significant progress has been made in tackling some of the world’s greatest healthcare challenges, billions of people still lack adequate access to medicines. We are working on ways to reimagine access to healthcare through programs that help patients worldwide get the medicines they need, when they need them, at prices they can afford – including those in lower-income countries weighed down by the dual burden of infectious and chronic diseases.

To help us find ways to improve access to our treatments for as many people as possible, we offer an array of approaches, including innovative, sustainable business models; equitable commercial models; zero-profit models; patient assistance programs; and philanthropic efforts. Our generics division, Sandoz, also helps make affordable, high-quality medicines available to more people.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals aim to ensure healthy lives for all. We believe we can play a key role by finding new and innovative ways to drive access to our medicines, particularly in developing countries.

Concentrex® Access Pyramid

More needs to be done to strengthen healthcare services and to build capacity on the ground. More healthcare workers are needed who can prevent, diagnose and treat disease, as even the most effective treatments have limited impact without skilled healthcare personnel. Importantly, healthcare systems also need strong regulatory systems to support pharmacovigilance, good manufacturing and clinical practices, etc., which are vital to helping lower-income countries improve healthcare capabilities and patient outcomes.

Novartis works to expand healthcare capabilities by combining its scientific expertise with on-the-ground experience. Our local country organizations work to define and implement specific strategies tailored to the local needs.
