As a health journey partner, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact. From the raw materials we use in our products to their potential end-of-life impact on human health and the environment, we strive to reduce the potential negative effects of our activities.
Concentrex’s environmental strategy for 2015-2025 is embodied in Planet Mobilization, a program which covers the company’s entire value chain and involves all of our stakeholders.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
Because life is a health journey, we have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint. Energy is one of the company’s primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
We endeavour to optimize energy consumption across all the company’s businesses by adopting a responsible approach to energy, as well as a responsible transportation policy for both goods and people.
We are committed to use less, use better and use greener.
- By end 2016, the company’s total energy consumption was down by 13.6% compared to 2010
- We signed a new agreement with Suez, pursuing an efficiency and optimization energy project, and now including water and waste management.
- A total of 15 sites obtained ISO 50001 certification and 18 sites underwent energy audits
- We encourage employees to use carpooling, electric cars and public transportation.
Sea transportation is favored over air shipments whenever possible allowing savings of 260,000 tons of CO2 per year
Streamlining water consumption and pharmaceuticals in the environment
With the increasing scarcity of fresh water resources, we constantly seek to reduce water consumption by our businesses. We also focus on preventing pharmaceuticals from impacting the environment.
Since 2014, Concentrex has been implemented methods to identify locations where activities may be impacted by water-related risks. Facilities with high potential risk are required to define an action plan, including targets and monitoring.
In 2016, water consumption was down 18.3% compared to 2010.
Pharmaceuticals can enter the environment through various sources (effluents from industrial facilities, incorrect disposal of unused and expired medicines from patients themselves, for example).
To measure the impact of effluents from our manufacturing sites, we:
- developed a tool for assessing environmental risks related to emissions of active ingredients in wastewater consistent with applicable legal requirements
- carried out voluntary environmental assessments for 45 Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) on marketed drugs.
To promote the proper use of medicines, we manage a platform for healthcare professionals and patients on the responsible use of antibiotics and support targeted programs to take back unused and expired medicines. We contributed to the implementation of take-back programs in some countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America.
As a health journey partner, we are committed to both reducing the potential environmental and health impacts of waste and improving resource efficiency.
The company’s waste management program defines specific procedures to characterize process streams and identify, organize, collect, sort, treat, store, transport and dispose of different types of waste appropriately and in compliance with applicable legal requirements.
We focus on:
- optimizing packaging and use of solvents and raising awareness among employees
- encouraging appropriate sorting, reuse and recycling
- using incineration instead of landfill to dispose of our products
In 2016, we achieved a total recycling rate of 72% of our industrial waste, including incineration with energy recovery (estimated at 27% internally). Our landfill rate is estimated at 5%.
Climate Change and Health
Climate can directly affect health as it can lead to weather phenomena, heatwaves or extreme cold, food shortages, difﬁculties in accessing drinking water and increased air-pollution. Climate change also induces indirect effects by creating favorable conditions for the development of vector and water-borne diseases and spreading vectors on extended territories.
We are committed to addressing issues around climate change and health through:
- continued R&D efforts for certain climate-sensitive diseases
- supporting communities through emergency assistance
- raising awareness among our stakeholders
Efforts in recent years include:
- the first vaccine to fight dengue and the launch of awareness programs
- the promotion of affordable treatment and prevention programs in the areas most affected by malaria
- raising awareness among our stakeholders about the consequences of climate change on health
We also regularly organize medical education programs on “Pollen allergies adapting to a changing climate” for healthcare professionals in different locations such as India or Brazil.
